Located on the eastern edge of Venice, Scuola di Scultura is a school for stonemasons. Drawing upon the traditions of Venetian workshops and scuole, the project provides spaces for the teaching of stone carving and architectural craft through direct engagement with material.
Central to the school is the tracing floor, where drawings are inscribed at full scale and used to guide the production of stonework. Through measured drawing, tilt casting and plaster casting, students learn to translate geometry and form from the two-dimensional surface into three-dimensional construction. Drawing is understood as a physical act of making, embedded within the process of working stone.
The building follows the logic of stone's transformation, with the processes of learning and production remaining visible within the life of the building.
Constructed from Istrian stone, historically transported across the Adriatic to build Venice, the project explores the relationship between material, craft and architectural knowledge. The school positions making as a form of education, where understanding emerges through the continual movement between hand and stone.
