Rethinking Metabolism : Waste-based Materials As Tools For Regenerative Architecture

This project investigates how architecture can operate as a regenerative metabolic system through the transformation of agricultural waste into building materials, spatial structures, and environmental infrastructure. Situated within the rice-producing landscape of northern Italy, the proposal establishes a materials research and fabrication centre developed in collaboration with the adjacent Riso San Raffaele farm.

The building combines laboratories, workshops, ceramic production spaces, exhibition areas, public learning environments, and material testing facilities into a continuous cycle of experimentation, fabrication, and reuse. Agricultural byproducts including rice husk, rice straw, and rice husk ash are explored as low-carbon alternatives to conventional construction materials, informing the development of composite blocks, insulation systems, and ceramic assemblies integrated throughout the project.

The project proposes architecture not as a static object, but as an evolving process of cultivation, fabrication, occupation, repair, and reuse, embedded within the ecological and agricultural cycles of the surrounding landscape.

The courtyard operates as the central material and circulation space of the project, linking
the public and research programmes while functioning as an active zone of loading,
fabrication, and exchange.

The Vaulted Elevation

The vaults forming the elevation draw on the proportions and masonry character of retained structures creating a visual continuity across the site while expressing the building's contemporary construction through its rice husk-based material systems.

The double-height space linking exhibition and community workshop spaces functions as a spatial and educational threshold within the building. It allows visitors to observe the rice byproduct construction systems and experimental material assemblies.
