Situated in the Athenian district of Psyri, this architectural research confronts overtourism and gentrification displacing local craftspeople. By retrofitting derelict structures and utilising spolia construction via a “new-antiparochi model”, this project explores a framework of 'useful tourism', where visitors participate in an experience economy of regional crafts, culinary practices, and construction, to disrupt the current socio-economic trajectories and facilitate community reinhabitation.
Adapting the Athenian tradition of the street as a domestic extension, communal life is organised around a courtyard and a shared kitchen, between the Tourist, the Locals and the Craftspeople.
Inviting tourists to participate in construction workshops, to give time and aid, an alternative (reversed) souvenir.
Exploring spatial arrangement, construction techniques and materiality through model making, at 1:100, 1:50 and 1:1. Developing low-tech construction techniques replicable by craftspeople, apprentices and tourists.
A sequential approach is devised from Greek vernacular practices, where the building is a constant material yard of found spolia and a display of making techniques. Construction is phased, reacting to need, demand and budget.
Gathering of people, softening of tension.
