Studio 1.4 - Extraordinary Bodies

Project details

Programme
Year 1
Tutors Annecy Attlee,  Joana Carla Soares Goncalves and Oliver Houchell

Studio 4 is interested in the space between things, invisible structures, the agency of objects and the effects that performative actions have on the experience of familiar environments. Fascinated by the places, rituals and objects through which everyday life is performed, the studio’s site is the unseen space between our bodies and the material world around us.

A Corda is a dynamic system of three interconnected structures suspended from the Carpenter’s Lock Bridge to wilfully disrupt the passage of pedestrians and cyclists below. Those on the bridge can exert control of these soft, expandable structures, inviting new forms of bodily engagement and a transformation of spatial interaction.

Espejos is a pair of playful devices located on the stepped timber seating on opposite sides of the canal. Each device is comprised of five identical tetrahedral modules with the potential to be co-joined at each node with wooden toggles. This variability offers spatial interaction for children and adults alike, the visually fragmented space within and around them created by the resulting ad-hoc geometrical relationship between hexagonal, reflective panels and open framework.

Inspired by the spontaneity of play observed in traditional children’s games, *A Corda* is a dynamic system of interconnected structures suspended from the Carpenter’s Lock Bridge to wilfully disrupt the passage of pedestrians and cyclists below.

Each device is comprised of five identical tetrahedral modules with the potential to be co-joined at each node with simple wooden toggles. This variability offers limitless spatial interaction for children and adults alike.
