Situated within the chalk landscape of Pitstone Quarry, this project proposes a Bird Observation Residency for ornithologists, conservation volunteers, and birdwatchers. Embedded within the quarry wall, the scheme responds to the site’s geology, ecology, and established birdwatching community, creating spaces for long-term observation while minimising disturbance to wildlife.
Developed through iterative drawings, physical models, and material studies, the design explores how architecture can emerge from the landscape rather than sit upon it. Influenced by the fragmented geometry of excavated chalk and the work of Enrique Miralles, it uses angular roofscapes, layered circulation routes, and embedded forms to strengthen the relationship between architecture and topography. The proposal comprises three lodges and a shared research building connected by elevated walkways.
Inspired by local bird species, the material palette and pathways reinforce the connection between habitat and architecture, creating sheltered, nest-like spaces for observation, living, and research.
Internal view looking out across the site from the viewing platform within Residency-C during wet weather, showcasing the sheltered internal viewing spaces designed for year-round bird observation.
The A1 drawing returns to the brief of Ground and Sky, beginning with an abstract view through the roofscape towards the sky and a flying bird. It follows the bird’s journey, exploring elements designed to support bird activity and observation.
A short film by Beatrix and Alma Damer, combining both projects with footage from Rainham Marshes. As our designs evolved in different directions, the film reconnects them, showing how they coexist within the same landscape.
