Located within the dynamic saltmarsh landscape of Two Tree Island, this project proposes a film school that responds directly to the environmental forces that shape the site. The architecture embraces wind, weather, tides, and erosion as active agents in the design process.
The project began with an investigation into the island’s dramatic and ever-changing panoramas. As views across the marsh are continuously transformed by atmospheric and tidal conditions, the landscape itself becomes a sequence of cinematic scenes. Recognising this potential, the proposal establishes a film school where the surrounding environment acts as a constantly evolving backdrop for learning, filming, and storytelling.
The architecture is designed to reveal these changing views. Thatch cladding is intentionally exposed to the elements, allowing wind and rain to erode portions of the building envelope and create new visual connections between interior spaces and the landscape beyond. The building’s form and orientation were informed by prevailing wind patterns, while a series of balloon experiments were used to map spatial trajectories between key viewpoints associated with different cinematic genres.
