[Sol]ence Architecturae Portmanteau

Project details

Programme
Year 5

Using Marcel Duchamp’s Boîte-en-valise as precedent, this project develops as the ‘Mobile Architectural Portmanteau’, a portable framework transposing a solar-responsive system generating architectural outputs akin to site conditions.

Each section, synonymous with the box’s many compartments, is intended to guide the user through an interactive design methodology of visual and written content, as a collection of generative and computational principles.

The project proposes a recalibration of the RIBA Plan of Works through an early solar stage, [Sol]encce, a composite metric combining solar parameters to inform design before form is fixed.

This enables predictive environmental synthesis through carbon, sun and cost matrices, comparing solar-responsive and standardised approaches through the proxy of façades, tracing the effects under the RIBA plan of works & RICS whole life carbon stages.

The Portmanteau concludes with a Grasshopper solar analysis guide positioning the architect as a transductive agent converting environmental data into spatial form, championing their shift from sole recipient of environmental data to author of its spatial consequences.

RIBA Plan Of Work Recalibration: Stage [Sol]ence

Stage [Sol]ence, proposed between Stage 1 (preparation and brief) and Stage 2 (concept design), acts as a live solar matrix simulating and iterating to embed solar data early, reducing late-stage corrections and associated carbon impacts.

Matrix of Interdependencies: Cost, Carbon, Sun

Discussing the costing triangle and carbon square, alongside the proposal of the diamond matrix positioning the sun as central to intrinsically reduce both cost and carbon implications in design whilst examining effects on specific project variables.

The solar illustration sets the core environmental baseline, preceding Stage [Sol]ence’s composite solar unit. Focused on facades, it forms part of a broader collection of generative design and computational principles awaiting user application.

Seasonal Solar Base: Parameters Of Study

The solar illustration sets the core environmental baseline, preceding Stage [Sol]ence’s composite solar unit. Focused on facades, it forms part of a broader collection of generative design and computational principles awaiting user application.

Stage [Sol]ence introduces a methodology to derive a speculative composite solar unit by combining multiple solar parameters in Grasshopper, tracing intersections to transduce indices which can inform architectural geometry.

A Grasshopper starter guide for architects to apply to active projects, demonstrating Stage [Sol]ence’s solar framework, as a catalyst for foreseeing later-stage environmental implications and bridging the gap between design and performance metrics.
